A surprising scenario at DELTAgroup Management Refresher Course II 2022

The DELTAgroup Academy organised this year’s Management Refresher Course (MRC) in the Winterthur area at the end of September. Each year, the operational managers at the DELTAgroup complete this course to keep up to speed with action planning and management developments. At the same time, this event is an ideal opportunity to give managers earmarked for new management tasks higher-level exercises and a chance to gain informative experience.

An unusual scenario for private security staff

The exercise organisers deliberately chose a scenario outside of DELTAgroup’s usual field of activity. Recent history in particular has shown us that organisations and managers need to be able to adapt to changing constraints quickly and comprehensively. This meant that the managers attending this year’s training had to deal with unknown scenarios and the associated issues raised during the course of their planning work.

The start of a demanding day

In the first phase, which started at 7 a.m., the exercise organisers introduced the participants to the fictitious scenario. All of Switzerland had been hit by devastating earthquakes and, due to the sheer scale of the catastrophe, the civil authorities were reliant on support from additional crews. DELTAgroup was tasked with making the village of "Malum" secure. Our managers then had to organise themselves and initiate the planning work for the upcoming operation. This involved mission-specific training and the forming of an advance reconnaissance team. At the same time, the senior managers had to assess the situation, take decisions and, shortly afterwards, command their team.

From planning to deployment

Following the improvised training sequences and the issuing of orders, there was a coordinated move to the scene of the fictitious catastrophe. The objective was to assume management of the site as quickly as possible and start work. The deployed forces were confronted with numerous injuries, fires, looters and gas leaks. As for the managers, they had to prioritise correctly, put "if-then" decisions into practice and log all of their actions. Keeping track of things while at the same time ensuring the flow of information in such a situation were just two of the many challenges faced.

Regular debriefings

The exercise sequences performed while following the situation and taking actions were interrupted at regular intervals to enable on-the-spot learning. In this context, the managers also swapped positions to ensure that as many of them as possible had an opportunity to assume leadership. Adopting this approach enabled the exercise organisers to establish, during the exercises themselves, that the managers were capable of improving the processes and communication as well as better coordinating the actions of different teams.

Conclusion

The DELTAgroup sustainably invests a massive amount in the basic and advanced training of its employees, so that it can remain THE partner of choice for complex security needs. Once again, the DELTAgroup Academy succeeded in organising a highly professional and practical exercise. The feedback received from the participating managers was unanimously positive. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the voluntary helpers and those who helped with the exercises for their wholehearted commitment. We’re all already looking forward to an informative MRC II 2023. Because we like assuming responsibility for people’s SECURITY.
